Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior official commented the attack made him without words and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
