On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
