New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
